making everybody happy …
with Elio de Angelis having the benefits of the more powerful Lotus 93T which housed Renault’s turbo V6, Nigel Mansell had to make do with the older Lotus 91, still driven by the atmospheric Ford DFV V8
eventually Mansell would get a turbo powered Lotus (94T) as well, half way through the season
Nigel was given the chance to test Lotus’ first attempt at an (re)active suspended car, here tried out at the 1983 Long Beach venue, he wasn’t very successful with the car but the team would go on to test the system on several more occasions during the year

a still wounded Niki Lauda in the pits during the 1976 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, only a month after his near fatal accident at the Nürburgring
Niki would manage a stunning 4th place in his Ferrari 312T2This is one of the reasons I love Niki Lauda so much. That 1976 season that he nearly won was an incredible and inspiring story. I cannot wait for the movie to come out.

what we miss … fenceless race tracks
all the way through to the early years 2000 it was possible to get pretty close to the track at Francorchamps at certain points of the track, especially around the Bruxelles/Pouhon area
but in the 80’s it was even more easy to get right at the action at legendary corners like Blanchimont
those were the days …
